Were these people targeted in some way or just random? Was there a judicial warrant out for any of these people (HOW MANY NEWS TEAM?!) or was ICE like, "Hey buddy, you look foreign. Where are your papers?" Employees? Just people in the lot bc hey Market Basket?

Hey.. this is more information than I got from an email from the City Manager an hour or so ago.
All that said was something like ICE has setup shop here in town, and the email confirmed there was no one taken away. Didn't give a location or any other details. So this is more info than I know as a resident.

I've been reading articles about this and what they plan on doing. Its disgusting and I worry about my neighbors and friends. I'm concerned about very public raids. Not just single homes or businesses, but large scale round ups.
I'm also concerned for myself even as a white dude. I mean, if this goes full force with military usage as fuckface wants, I am concerned about being caught in some sort of cross fire. What's to say that I could be picking up a rotisserie chicken one day and get scooped up or mowed down come out of Market Basket. I mean that's definitely more than I wanted for my dollar.
I'm sorry I don't want my town to turn into a war zone because some broken old geezer with an insane ego who also shits his pants says so. You want immigration control, this is not how you do it.

Look up the extraordinary powers ICE has to detain people. They have a history of arresting, isolating, and deporting people without allowing them lawyers. They've even deported a number of natural -born US citizens. Now ICE has a green light to do whatever they want.

Let's look at that timeline, shall we?
Entered the country: March 2024 (presumably on a valid visa via airplane since he arrived in NY)
Warrant issued in Brazil: June 2024
Overstayed his visa: No date given for departure requirement
Arrested: 31 December 2024 (under Biden's watch)
So in summary the story you linked has nothing to do with the story about recent enforcement actions, has nothing to do with the advice provided for non-criminal illegal immigrants, and it demonstrates how ICE was targeting criminals in the US illegally during the Biden administration as a routine and timely matter.

If someone is wanted for a crime, the police can get a warrant for their arrest, or ICE can if they're not American citizens.
What we don't want them doing--and what a judge just told them not to do--is walking into a restaurant, arresting everyone in sight, or everyone they think "looks suspicious," and deporting them without a hearing.
The difference is whether a random fed can decide that you may say you're from Dorchester, but you look like you might be from Damascus, and deport you without having to justify it.
